Mullite sand is a refrctory alumino-silicate material consisting of mullite (3Al₂O₃·2SiO₂). Mullite is famous for it's extremely high stability in high tempratures. The high the mullite, the higher is the temprature withstanding capacity and stability.

We make mullite sand ranging from mullite percetage 45-75% which can withstand tempratures ranging 1750-1950°C.

Properties of Mullite Sand:

It's mainy composed of Alumina (Al2O3) and Silica (SiO2). Typically around 45-75% Al2O3 and balance SiO2.

It's colour may vary from source to source but it's typically gray or brown in colour.

It has a orthorhombic crystal structure.

It has high refractoriness to withstand tempratures ranginf from 1750°C to 1950°C.

Good stability against acid alkalis and slags.

It has extremely high thermal shock resistance and a low thermal expanse coefficient.

Uses of Mullite Sand:

1. Refractory Applications

It's used to manufacture lining of furnaces, kilns and reactors in glass and cement industries.

It's used to make shelves and beams in Kiln furniture hence supporting ceramic production.

It's also used to make boiler lining due to it's high thermal resisitance.

2. Investment Casting (Lost Wax Casting)

As mullite doesn't expand and deform at high tempratures, it is widely used in casting of moulds used in investment casting.

This ensure a smooth surface finish on casting parts especially where high precision is required like aerospace, turbine and automative industries.

3. Foundry Applications

Generally normal sand is used in metal casting, but there are times where the temprature of the molten metal is quite high than usual. Mullite sand is used in such purposes. Generally used in non-ferrous and stainless steel castings.
