Dolomite is one of the naturally and widely occurring mineral. Considering India, it has many mines in many states. Dolomite chemical name is Calcium magnesium Carbonate and Chemical Formula as (CaMg(CO₃)₂). It is used in many Industries due to its properties. Following are the uses in industries and application.
1. Dolomite for Paint Industry
Dolomite has vital role in paint industry. Its different size of powder helps as filler in emulsions.
Dolomite in sand form or aggregates is used as filler in texture.
Apart from filler it also adds properties like enhancing paint durability and improving opacity along with witness. Its chemical resistance nature helps the mixture to be chemically stable along with pH stability. Dolomite helps in adhesion and binding properties of paint intact for long period. Due to its opcaifier nature, it helps as partially substituting TiO2, thus helping in cost reduction of overall paint mixture.
2. Dolomite for Steel and Metallurgy
In Steel production, Dolomite is used as flux to removes impurities. It basically reduces the melting point of impurities like Alumina, Sulphur, Phosporus and silica and thereby convert them into slag which is taken our from blast furnace. It also helps in controlling viscocity of slag thereby making it easy for removal from blast furcance.
Dolomite is also used to make refractory brick which is used in wall lining inside Blast furnace. At high temperature, the slag formed in Blast furnace is chemically active and thus try to erode the wall lining. Dolomite bricks helps has basic nature which try to neutralise the slag facing the wall of blast furnace. This process helps to reduce the maintenance cost of blast furnace while making steel and enhance life of wall lining.

Dolomite and Calcite, both are used to reduce acidity of soil. But dolomite also add magnesium along with calcium to the soil. Dolomite is mainly used when pH level of soil in more then 7. Thus, it helps in growth of plant.
Dolomite is used as calcium and magnesium supplement for animals and live stock.

Dolomite is the main raw material to manufacture magnesium salts like Magnesium oxide.
