Diatomaceous Earth
Vstake Overseas is the leading exporter of diatomateous earth in India
DIatomaceous Earch is a siliceous sedimentary rock made majorly fro the fossilized remains of diatoms which contains microscopic algae and hard silica shells. It occurs naturally and it's very soft in nature. It has some very unique properties which are quite unique to itself and finding multiple application in various industries.
Properties of Diatomaceous Earth
Chemical Composition: Primarily silica (SiO₂), typically around 80-90%
Texture: Fine, powdery, and light
Color: White, off-white, or grayish
Porosity: High surface area and absorbent
Abrasive: Due to its sharp, microscopic particles, DE is slightly abrasive
Non-toxic: When handled properly, it's safe for humans and animals (though it can irritate the skin or lungs if inhaled in large quantities).
Common Types of Diatomaceous Earth
Food Grade DE: It's used in food, agriculture and health suppliments.
Industrial Grade DE: Used for filtration, construction and other industrial uses.
Uses of Diatomaceous Earth
1. Filtration
It's used in water filtration especially to remove fine partiles from liquids.
It's also used in the production of beer, wine and juices as it filters our impurities with changing the taste of the end product.
2. Pest Control
It's one of the most effective insecticide which is effective on most of the insects like ants, fleas, bedbugs, cockroaches etc. It causes dehydration in the insects. As it's natural it's widely used in organic farming.
3. Agriculture
It's used as a soil conditioner to retain water and a fingicide to control fungal growth as well.
4. Absorbent Material
It's used for oil spill cleanup as it's quite porous in nature. Being porous it absorbs oils, liquids and chemicals in industrial as wella s environmental cleanups.
It's also used in the production of cat litter as it's a great absorber of moisture and odour.
5. Industrial Applications
It's used a an extremely mild abrasive. Being natural and having such abrasive properties it's perfectly used in the manufacturing of toothpaste, polishing powder and other light polishing compounds.
It is also used to enhance the texture and durability of paints when used as a filler.
